There’s A Really Breathtaking Reason To Look Up At The Sky Tonight

Let’s fall in love with space all over again.

We already got to witness the gorgeous Strawberry Moon, but now, another one of space’s amazing natural occurrences is coming our way.

The sky will be lit as theDelta Aquarid meteor shower peaks tonight, and we have front row seats.

The shower reaches its climax somewhere between July 27 and 30, and if you manage to find a nice piece of dark sky, you could see up to 20meteors every hour.

Tonight is arguably the best time to get a glimpse of the show because the moon is going to be crescent, so it won’t be lighting up the sky too much.

Here’s a nice little time lapse of the shower back in 2012:

The space watchers atSloohwill broadcast it live.An expert said,

Because of their angle of entry into the atmosphere, the Delta Aquarids tend to leave long, lingering trails, which sets them apart from most other meteors.

It’s still a bit of a mystery as to what causes the Delta Aquarids. Some astronomers suspect the event happens when the earth passes through a stream of debris left by the periodic Comet 96P/Machholtz. The comet was only discovered in 1986, though the meteor shower has been observed since at least the 1870s.

The best time to see the shower is either around midnight or just before dawn.

So now, go get your space on.
